Why Do the Events of 1857-8 in India Matter?

The events of 1857-8 are extremely significant and have changed India dramatically into the India we see today. We see the British taking over India from the East India Company after a ‘mutiny’ in 1857 and welcoming it into a colony in the British Empire. It was described as â€Å"the jewel in the crown† of the British Empire because of their rich sources such as silk that were deported from India to countries in Europe. This made Britain considerably richer and greedier as they increased their power by continuing to expand their empire.The British made many positive changes as well as negative changes in India during their rule such as introducing technology such as expanding railways for everyone to use, and education for some Indians. These are just a few changes that helped a trade-inspired outlook within India. Nevertheless, they also took advantage of the Indians by making money from their resources, charging them heavy taxes to use in Britain and sending ma ny Indians to fight for Britain in the First World War.We see that many changes shaped the modern India today, but why do these changes matter to us? We find out much about British rule in India from the outbreak of fighting of the mutiny before 1857 as it tells us about how the East India Company forced strict rules and intervened upon the Hindu society such as ignoring their religious beliefs, which was one of the key factors leading up to the Indian ‘mutiny’. We see that although some changes did benefit from the Indians, the general attitude was negative, since all Indians were heavily taxed as discriminated.The way Britain changed from a trader to a ruler reveals to us how greedy Britain were at the time and how powerful as they could gain control of such a big country like India. We also can see how the British abused their power as they treated the Indians unfairly, as, in an account written by Vishnubhat Godse, an Indian who was living in the city of Jhansi in 1 857, described how they British took power of it.He remarked that the English were â€Å"shooting down every man that they saw and setting fire to houses† while entering the city and described that â€Å"the terror in the city at this time was immeasurable† and that the â€Å"screaming and crying was endless†. We see that the Indians were portrayed as vulnerable and weak as the British took over. Furthermore, the British broke their own policy, the Doctrine of Lapse by taking over the city since the deceased prince did have an adopted son. This shows the desire for more territory overpowering the need to follow the treaties they had made with he princes of states and therefore ignoring their own rules. The corruption, ignorance and brutality within the East India Company showed that they were not successful in ruling as it caused the mutiny in 1857 and therefore made the Indians very unhappy. The accounts of events of 1857 reveal to us that India was not ruled w ell, was a much divided country and that the citizens in general were not satisfied on being controlled by Britain . Many Indians were very unhappy about the British interfering in Hindu socio-religious affairs and charging them high taxes etc.However, many Indians benefited from British rule and profited much from trade. Europeans who had settled down in India were considered of a much higher class than the Indians and Indians were discriminated. This reveals how people in India all had different attitudes towards the British. We can see that by many different accounts of the outbreak of fighting in India. For example, an English clergyman’s wife describes in her diary the â€Å"horror† that the Indians have inflicted and how there was â€Å"heavy firing all day† and how â€Å"ten Europeans were killed†.However, another account from an Indian man, Vishnubhat Godse, claimed that he â€Å"was filled with dread† and that the English soldiers â€Å"t ortured them, demanding rupees, gold, pearls or other valuables† and if they found those, they sometimes would let the innocent Indians free. These primary sources reveal to us how chaotic India was and the different views people held. We can also draw from this how unsuccessful Britain was at ruling. The consequences of 1857 changed India to be the India we see today.In 1858, Queen Victoria read, â€Å"We disclaim the right and desire to impose out [Christian] convictions on any of our subjects†. This meant that she did not want to bring about any further religious change in India. The British invested heavily in large irrigation projects in order to increase food production and primary education for Indians. They also dramatically expanded the railways and jobs in the government were opened to Indian applicants. These are just some of the examples of the changes made to make India a trade-inspired country and modernised.This can be considered the first step made to ma king the India it is today. Even though the ‘mutiny’ did not gain independence for the Indians, this was a significant turning point in the history of India. The ‘mutiny’, regarded by many as India's first War of Independence, had many important consequences and the structure of British India was to be re-organised extensively, including the East India company being cast out on its role and Queen Victoria being crowned Empress of India in 1877, the British investing in large irrigation projects, education and railways.However, there had been no real danger that British rule in India would be overthrown during the ‘mutiny’. The majority of the native soldiers had remained loyal. In fact, without them the British could hardly have suppressed the rebellion. During the attack on Delhi, for example, from the 11,200 soldiers on the British side, there were 7,900 Indian soldiers. Large areas of the country remained unaffected by what the Indians calle d  Ã¢â‚¬Å"the devil's wind. † So had the revolt been?Was it just a military mutiny in a part of the army, as the British believed, or a national uprising, as later Indian historians have argued? The truth lies somewhere in between. It was traditional India that had risen against the British, as the British had tried to push Christianity upon the Indians, the India which remembered its past, hated the present and dreaded the future that was now absolutely certain to belong to the Westernized Indian, and not to the Indian soldiers or princes.The ‘mutiny’ is a chapter of Indian history that will be remembered as something to learn from and although the British defeated the Indians in the ‘mutiny’, many Indians still desired independence as they felt they were not treated fairly. This mattered significantly as the unsatisfied need for independence continued even though good changes were made. Therefore this was a key point in Indian history which was re membered and was certainly a factor to build up to when India actually gained independence in 1947.It also resulted in change in the attitudes of the citizens after the ‘mutiny’ as many Indians were treated maliciously after the ‘mutiny’ as we can see from ‘Empire’ by Jeremy Paxman: â€Å"Entire villages were burned down; mutineers were smeared in pig fat before execution, tied to the muzzles of cannon and blown to pieces. At the site of Cawnpore massacre rebels were made to lick the dried blood from the floor† From this short xtract be can see how unmerciful the British were after the mutiny, as they killed rebels in painful ways while making them break the rules of their faith by smearing them in pig fat and making them lick blood from the floor as it broke their religious beliefs. The way the Indians were treated will always be remembered and so it continues the need for independence. However, many good changes were made after the m utiny that will be remembered as good such as the modernisation of the country to give India a trade-inspired outlook. So how do the events of 1857-8 matter?They matter because the ‘mutiny’ made a platform for a bigger rebellion for independence, it brought India the technology it needed, and Britain started to build India to be the India we see today, although there were some negative effects as well. As a modern audience, we can remember these events in a positive light, and remember them as changes that put India onto a road to modernisation. Motivation of Employees

Human resource, commonly known as the employees or working staff, are said to be the life blood of an organization. They work for the establishment. They are the ones who serve the clients or customers. Therefore, within these people rests the organization’s ability to perform its daily operations, achieve its short and long-term objectives, and eventually be one of the foundations of the success, or failure, of the organization. Thus, the need to, not just satisfy the customers of the establishment, but delight the employees as well. Situations that commonly happen in an organization include poor performance of employees, lack of dedication to work, dissatisfaction with the job and the work environment, and more. All these may bring about even worse scenarios like adversely affecting daily operations, and/or labor union strikes, which definitely paralyze the establishment’s operations. Thus, management must not only consider the gratification of its customers but the value of employee satisfaction as well, thus the need for employee motivation. More so, motivated employees contribute to the survival of the organization (Lindler, 1998). As a matter of fact, management’s motivation of employees in various ways seems to be a very essential matter nowadays. This is because â€Å"motivation is requisite to learning† (Stack, 2007). And motivation itself may come through either extrinsic or intrinsic forms, or both. Extrinsic motivation is â€Å"external inducement, namely recognition, incentives/bonuses, or rewards† (Malone & Lepper, 1987). Employees frequently complain about low salaries, insufficient incentives, unsatisfactory benefits, and the like. And it cannot be denied that these are material reasons why employees tend to resign from their jobs, thus the potential for losing customer value because employee dissatisfaction and lack of loyalty. This type of motivation can be considered effective for those employees who have goals of promotional incentives. According to Michael Williams (1996), extrinsic motivators, such as rewards, added benefits good feedback, and good expectations, may be utilized to boost the employees’ effort to learn. In stirring employees with external motivators, management associates rewards to positive and constructive behavior. It is almost always inherent in every employee to feel valued by management when their performance are appreciated or praised. They usually develop the drive to perform better in their work because of the incentives received, and possibly future inducements which may be received if more effort is exerted. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is viewed as promoting learning that is â€Å"explorative, self-regulated and aimed at deep-level processing, exploration, and reflection† (Martens, Bastiaens, & Kirschner, 2007). This type of motivation, therefore, lacks or does not totally include external inducements. Intrinsic motivators include setting own goals for learning, placing importance on skills and contentment, being readily productive, and more. Employees are in themselves motivated to work effectively. This is not primarily because of incentives or rewards, but because they recognize the need to do so, in order to be able to perform their tasks well, become productive and serve as assets to the company. This type of motivation poses a more mature drive to learn and perform well, lacking the presence of tangible incentives. Malone and Lepper (1987) describe this as â€Å"what people will do without external inducements† (Malone & Lepper, 1987). This type of motivation is possess by those employees who seek no additional reward from management but simply recognizes the interest and enjoyment in performing their tasks. No matter, as more dynamic business communities emerge, the more there is the need not simply to employ people who are capable of performing the task well but the need as well to motivate them, and make them learn to motivate themselves and love their work. This can be proved by the fact that the company tries as a much as possible to minimize cost in their information technology infrastructure. This can be seen in the way they handle their information technology needs. For example, the company prefers to develop their own programs rather than employing software developing companies to write their program or buying software’s. It is good to develop ones softwa re internally, but it has its limitation. In fact, what most companies do is to buy shell programs and then configure them accordingly to the suitability of their company. They do not develop their programs themselves from scratch. The Souls of Black Folk Essay W. E. B. Du Bois’ book entitled ‘The Souls of Black Folk’ talks about the color-line of citizens being the most common problem in the society. In a prophetical statement, he describes the society of the 20th century by putting emphasis on how it is to be free, what are the corresponding effects, as well as the social responsibilities that the leaders carry in their society. He states that problems of the society in the 20th century refer to problems of the color line (Du Bois 1). In an effort to interpret the spiritual world of the ten thousand people that live in the dawn of the 20th century, Du Bois refers to ‘emancipation’ as the root cause of people rising in personal leadership, creating two worlds that are within and without the Veil, with the effect of making way to train men for life. This paper revolves around the advance of the society in terms of color and black peasantry. Plunging deeper within the Veil, Du Bois reflected the true nature of the black society—its religion, struggle, passion and sorrow. As Du Bois stated, â€Å"The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife,this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self† (4). To end this strife, the black folk have to merge with the society and be a co-worker in a culture where no color lingers in the soul. Main Body According to the prophecy of Du Bois, the first decade of the 20th century would be filled with the black society searching the true sense of freedom in the true world—the emergence of war, terror, lies, disorganization, and contradiction†¦ for the sake of freedom that has not been sought. Du Bois stated, â€Å"The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line,the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea† (9). Slaves, refugees, and fugitives of war sent organizations into sending clothes, money, books, and teachers, usually to the black societies that were nearly destitute brought by famine and war. Despite temporal relief, the crisis included a labor problem that multiplied and affected vast dimensions in the societies, which led to the cultivation through systems of control. This brought great relief, as the war finally led to their liberty—an order and a system apt for the development of bureau set for â€Å"improvement, protection, and employment of refugee freedmen† (12). From a state of forced labor, black folks were emancipated to a new state of industry that brought the picture of black workers to a new dimension of industrial privilege. It was totally not the worst type of slavery in the world, but it was capable of totally deserting the rights of the black men†¦ putting them under the same classification of the ox and the animals. Despite the fact that they fought with their soul for the liberty that was barred by the system of slavery—in great masses that almost terrified the political system—the black folks fought for freedom with a cry†¦ dividing the two classes and driving them away from chains. The general system and local organization of these folks, however, had led to two basic problems that are the following: first, the abandoned lands of the South, which rapidly melted away from the hands of the Freedmen’s Bureau; and second, the complexity of perfecting the local organization with significantly wide fields of work (Du Bois 15). By 1866, the basic step was to finalize a step that extended the Bureau, authorized additional commissioners, maintained army officers, and sold forfeited lands on merely nominal terms (17). Having to dominate and manage the government of the so-called ‘unreconstructed’ South, the Freedmen’s Bureau became what Du Bois stated as â€Å"a full-fledged government of men† (17). However, as Du Bois stated, In the work of establishing the Negroes as peasant propri-etors, the Bureau was from the first handicapped and at last absolutely checked. Something was done, and larger things were planned; abandoned lands were leased so long as they remained in the hands of the Bureau, and a total revenue of nearly half a million dollars derived from black tenants. (19) Salvation came when the Freedmen’s Bank made a huge step in the development of the social individuality and stance of the Black Men. Despite the crash—when hard-earned dollars suddenly drifted away from the freedmen—the stabilization brought by the Freedmen’s Bank brought huge relief to the black folks of the society: The deeds of these rulers fall mainly under seven heads: the relief of physical suffering, the overseeing of the beginnings of free labor, the buying and selling of lad, the establishment of schools, the paying of bounties, the administration of justice, and the financiering of all these activities. (19) Conclusion From a life of total isolation from the more fortunate ‘colors’ of the society, the black folks learned the ABCs of being free, by combining the leaders’ faith and goodwill to the folks’ passion and love for freedom. By means of emancipation, the black folks awakened to a consciousness that brought joy and relief, which made slavery appear to be a myth. The 20th century was, indeed, a time of emancipation and great hunger for human rights, liberty, and democracy. I worked at a service station during the time I was going to school and to make any money you needed to have work at the plants down here, which is North American Rayon or Bemberg. Through cultural performance, one is able to appreciate the behavior of a specific group in their everyday life. This will avoid biasness and subjectivity when reporting about a particular group of people. Having conducted a fieldwork study in a bus, different patterns from the population were established. Majority of the people in the bus were students, who displayed different values, and norms. There was also a discrepancy between the way the older generation and the young behaved. While the older generations seemed to like interacting with others through communication, majority of the young adults in the bus perceived this as interfering with their privacy. The place The place for the study was the bus, and also in the street. I choose this place owing to the fact it was more convenient to me since I used this means of transport almost daily. Further, I saw the same people almost every day. For this reason, it was possible to study the co nsistency of the behaviors manifested by the population I was dealing with. The bus was also the best way to have unbiased sample owing to the fact that any person in my neighborhood used this means of transportation. The results would therefore be imperative in making an inference about the rest of the population. At this site, my main subjects of study were passengers, who included the students, drivers, and a few working class individuals. The fieldwork was also conducted in the street where the main focus was the homeless population. In this second setting, there were the old, children and young adults.
